New studies with novel dopamine d-1 antagonists are needed to see if what is seen in animals with translate into man. D-1 antagonists may also work synergistically with other medications already used to treat addiction.

When dopamine is released it activates what are known as dopamine receptors. There is the D-1 and several other types of dopamine receptors. The D-1 receptor appears to be strongly associated with opiate addiction. One approach to prevent opiate addiction would be to administer a D-1 receptor blocker together with an opiate drug to reduce the high and addictive potential. It works in animals but it needs to be studied in humans.ecopipam is a D-1 receptor blocker that appears to be safe and should be tested for preventing opiate addiction.
